Summer

Summer in the Lungau? Where to start ...

We are fantastically placed between several mountain ranges and two narrow valleys each with a river which leads to our wide valley. Each range has stunningly different landscapes. Although this section is labelled 'Summer' it is not only Summer that is great for walking here. Autumn is a fantastic time to be on the hills. The colours are changing, the weather is cooler and more stable and for pics the air is clearer. So don't just think Summer or Winter when you think of holidays.

Nearest is the river Mur, 200 meters away from us and the river the Chalet is named after. This flows from the Muhr valley through the Lungau valley down past the main town of Tamsweg (20km away) and on until 365 km later it finishes in the thermal resort of Bad Radkersburg in Styria. It has a walking and cycling path all the way along its route and an anual cycling event 'Tour de Mur,' runs the whole length. There are also white water rafting adventures and cannyoning trips from Tamsweg.

The other main valley is the way into the Lungau from Salzburg on the A10 but you won't see the most spectacular scenery whle driving as the road disappears into tunnels deep underneath it! In July 2012 this area was certified as an official UNESCO Biosphere site which basically means it is a totally natural landscape and is happily protected to maintain it. Other such special areas around the world include Ayers Rock, the Central Amazon, Yellowstone, Guatamala’s Tikal National Park and the Galapagos Islands. It is a truly fantastic area to hike with mountain lakes, flower meadows, ridge walks, the list just goes on and on. It is about a half hours drive from our door plus the local bus goes from St.Michael centre all the way into the park so no car needed. Have a look at the map below which is centred at the Alm on the lake .

Value

Just under half an hour the other way, well in fact it's the next valley over but from here you have to go up and sort of left and... ANYWAY... just up the road there is the fantastic area of Obertauern. A great and high ski area in the winter ,its rugged terrain becomes a walkers paradise in the Summer and Autumn with some very dramatic and quite tricky terrain to deal with. But your effort is rewarded with magnificent views, a fantastic sense of achievement, some surprises and ,of course wonderful huts to relax in and quench the well earned thirst.

If you feel the need to get even higher, then we have the Hohe Trauren national park near by. The river Mur starts in the park so we just follow the river up and we are there. Alternatively we can pop through the tunnel under Katschberg mountain and enter through there. The park has most of the local 3000+ meter peaks and some great Via Ferratas .

Outdoors offers amoungst other things, walking both low and high level, road cycling, mountain biking, pony trekking / horse riding, high ropes courses, white water rafting, golf, swimming pools and wellness centres, adventure play grounds and of course lounging in the sun in our garden.
